Diacomit

Diacomit (stiripentol) is a prescription medicine used together with other antiepileptic drugs to treat severe seizures in children with Dravet syndrome, a rare and difficult-to-control form of epilepsy.

Benefits

• Helps reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in children with Dravet syndrome
• Used in combination with clobazam and valproate for better seizure control
• May help improve daily functioning and reduce emergency hospital visits
• Taken orally as capsules or powder for suspension (for children who can’t swallow pills)

Dosage

• Dose is based on body weight and given two or three times a day
• Usually taken with food to help reduce stomach upset
• The doctor may adjust the dose gradually based on response and side effects
• Always follow the treatment plan exactly as prescribed

Warnings and Precautions

• Can cause drowsiness or sleepiness, especially when used with other seizure medicines
• May interact with other medications — inform your doctor of all medicines being used
• Requires regular monitoring of liver function and blood cell counts
• Tell your doctor if your child has liver problems or is not gaining weight normally
• Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless clearly needed

How to Use

• Take at the same times every day, with meals
• Do not skip doses — consistency is important for seizure control
• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible unless it’s almost time for the next one
• Do not stop using Diacomit suddenly — this may cause seizures to worsen
• Powder form should be mixed with water and given right after preparation

Storage

• Store at room temperature (15–30°C)
• Keep away from moisture, heat, and direct light
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date on the packaging

Side Effects

• Common: drowsiness, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, trouble sleeping
• Other possible: irritability, unsteadiness, low white blood cell count
• Serious (seek help): persistent vomiting, signs of infection (fever, sore throat), unusual tiredness, yellowing of the skin or eyes (liver issues)
