Cefoxitin for Injection, USP is a broad-spectrum second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, making it effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including anaerobic organisms.
Benefits
- Broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria
- Effective for mixed infections in the abdomen, pelvis, and soft tissues
- Useful in surgical prophylaxis to prevent postoperative infections
- Bactericidal action (kills bacteria rather than inhibiting their growth)
- Can be used in certain patients allergic to penicillin (with caution)
- Stable in the presence of beta-lactamase–producing organisms
Dosage
- Dosage depends on the type and severity of the infection, patient’s age, weight, and kidney function
- Typical adult dose: 1 to 2 grams every 6 to 8 hours intravenously or intramuscularly
- For surgical prophylaxis: 2 grams administered 30 to 60 minutes before incision
- Dose adjustments may be needed in patients with renal impairment
- Always follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor or healthcare provider
Warnings and Precautions
- May cause allergic reactions, especially in patients with a history of penicillin allergy
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms or superinfection
- Risk of Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea during or after treatment
- Monitor renal function in elderly or renally impaired patients
- Not recommended in neonates under 3 months unless directed by a healthcare provider
- Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only under medical supervision
