What Causes Acne? According to an American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) research, 9.4% of the population globally has suffered from acne. In the United States, acne is the most common skin condition that over 50 million Americans endure.

Acne is a dermal condition that appears when your hair follicles become clogged with much oil and dead skin cells. Acne causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. It is most especially present among teenagers because of puberty.

Here are some things about what causes acne:

  • Clogged skin
  • Excessive oily skin
  • Dead skins blocking the pores
  • Bacteria build-up

Other factors in developing acne also include:

  • Hormonal change (puberty or pregnancy)
  • Endocrine conditions
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Poor sleep
  • Stress
  • High oil content beauty products
  • Specific medications (lithium, hormonal birth control)
  • Genetics

Acne usually appears on the face. However, it is not always the case. There are also what dermatologists refer to as back acne and butt acne. They usually develop on the back and butt, resulting in a reddish bump on those parts of our skin.

What causes back acne?

Acne on your back is referred to as “bacne” or “back acne.” It can result in red lumps, whiteheads, or blackheads, which can be unpleasant, annoying, and ugly.

The causes of back acne are as follows:

  • Family history
  • Friction
  • Hormones
  • Medications
  • Poor hygiene
  • Skincare products
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Sweat

What causes butt acne?

Similar to back acne, butt acne is quite common too. These are also rough, red bumps on the skin. However, this time, they can be found across the bum. But what causes butt acne?

The causes of butt acne are as follows:

  • Blocked pores
  • Folliculitis (an inflamed hair follicle)
  • Keratosis Pilaris
  • Boils (skin abscesses)
  • Sweat
  • Poor hygiene

Acne drugs

There is a lot of acne medication available on the market. The most common topical prescription drugs for acne are:

  • Retinoids and retinoid-like drugs antibiotics
  • Azelaic acid and salicylic acid
  • Dapsone (Aczone)

On the one hand, oral medications for acne are also available, like:

  • Antibiotics (tetracycline or macrolide)
  • Combined oral contraceptives (progestin and estrogen)
  • Anti-androgen agents (spironolactone)
  • Isotretinoin (Amnesteem, Clavarees, and others)

If acne breakouts seem uncontrollable, you should visit your trusted dermatologist for possible professional intervention.

Skin is the largest organ of the human body. Hence, it is equally important to take good care of it. Clear skin away from acne signals a radiating physical glow and an oozing boost in confidence and self-esteem.
