Aricept

Aricept contains donepezil hydrochloride, a medication used to treat mild, moderate, and severe Alzheimer’s disease. It works by increasing levels of a chemical messenger in the brain that supports memory, thinking, and reasoning. While it does not cure Alzheimer’s, it may help slow the progression of symptoms and improve daily functioning.

Dosage

• The usual starting dose is 5 mg once daily

• For severe Alzheimer’s disease, the dose may be further increased to 23 mg once daily after at least 3 months on 10 mg
• Should be taken at bedtime to reduce the risk of nausea and dizziness
• Orally disintegrating tablets should be allowed to dissolve on the tongue before swallowing

Warnings and Precautions

• May cause slow heart rate, especially in people with heart conditions
• Can increase the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding, particularly if taken with NSAIDs like ibuprofen
• Should be used with caution in individuals with asthma or lung disease
• Can cause fainting or dizziness, so patients should get up slowly from sitting or lying down
• Not recommended for people with severe liver disease
• Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning surgery

Usage Instructions

• Take Aricept at the same time each day
• Can be taken with or without food
• Do not crush or chew the tablets
• If using the orally disintegrating tablet, allow it to dissolve completely on the tongue before swallowing
• If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is close to the next scheduled dose

Storage Information

• Store at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F)
• Keep in a dry place away from moisture and heat
• Store in original packaging to protect from light
• Keep out of reach of children and pets

Common Side Effects

• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Fatigue
• Insomnia or unusual dreams
• Muscle cramps
• Loss of appetite
• Headache or dizziness
• More serious side effects may include severe stomach pain, difficulty breathing, or seizures
