Monoprost is a prescription eye drop for lowering intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is a preservative-free, single-use latanoprost medicine designed for once-daily dosing. You can order through our online pharmacy with US shipping from Canada, which may help if you pay without insurance.

What Monoprost Is and How It Works

Monoprost® contains latanoprost, a prostaglandin analog that helps fluid drain from the eye. This improves outflow through the uveoscleral pathway and can reduce pressure on the optic nerve over time.

Border Free Health connects U.S. patients with licensed Canadian partner pharmacies; prescriptions are verified with prescribers before dispensing.

As preservative free latanoprost drops, this treatment avoids benzalkonium chloride exposure. That can matter if you have surface sensitivity or wear contact lenses. It is intended for once-daily use in the evening unless your prescriber directs otherwise. Always follow your clinician’s instructions and the official label.

Who It’s For

This medicine is used to lower elevated eye pressure in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It may be considered when a clinician prefers a preservative-free option or when once-daily therapy fits your routine best.

Avoid use if you have a known hypersensitivity to latanoprost or any component of the formulation. Tell your healthcare professional if you have a history of uveitis, macular edema, aphakia or pseudoaphakia with torn posterior lens capsule, or active ocular infections, including herpetic keratitis. Use in pregnancy or while nursing should be discussed with your prescriber.

Dosage and Usage

Typical dosing is one drop in the affected eye or eyes once daily, in the evening. Using it more frequently may lessen the pressure-lowering effect. If you are prescribed other eye drops, separate each product by at least five minutes.

Wash hands before use. Twist open a unit-dose vial. Tilt your head back, gently pull the lower lid down, and instill one drop into the pocket. Avoid touching the tip to the eye or any surface. Discard the vial after single use, even if some liquid remains. For contact lenses, remove them prior to instillation and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.

To reduce systemic absorption, your clinician may suggest pressing a finger at the corner of the eye near the nose for one minute after instilling the drop. Follow your prescriber’s guidance and the product insert for complete directions.

Strengths and Forms

This product is supplied as single-use, preservative-free unit-dose vials containing latanoprost Monoprost 50 mcg/mL. Packaging sizes and presentations can vary by manufacturer and market. Availability may differ over time.

Missed Dose and Timing

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember on the same day. If it is near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not use extra drops to make up for a missed dose.

Storage and Travel Basics

Store as directed on the label. Keep vials in their pouch until use to protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Do not reuse opened vials.

When traveling, carry vials in your hand luggage along with a copy of your prescription. Keep the medicine away from direct heat and sunlight. If you cross time zones, aim for roughly evening use based on your new local schedule, and ask your prescriber if you need help adjusting.

Unit-dose packaging supports hygiene. The convenience of Monoprost single use vials may help maintain consistent dosing while limiting contamination risks.

Benefits

As a prostaglandin-class therapy, it can lower intraocular pressure with once-daily use. The preservative-free unit-dose format may be preferable for people with sensitive ocular surfaces. Single-use vials are portable, discreet, and simple to dispose of after each application. This treatment also fits well alongside other daytime therapies because it is typically used in the evening.

Side Effects and Safety

  • Eye redness or irritation
  • Itchiness or burning sensation
  • Dry eye or foreign body feeling
  • Eyelash growth or thickening
  • Darkening of eyelid skin
  • Gradual change in iris color

Less common but serious effects can include macular edema, uveitis, or reactivation of herpetic keratitis in susceptible individuals. Seek medical attention if you experience sudden vision changes, severe eye pain, or signs of infection. Use caution if you have a history of ocular inflammation, and tell your clinician about any prior eye surgery or lens issues.

Drug Interactions and Cautions

Using more than one prostaglandin analog at the same time may reduce the pressure-lowering effect. If you need multiple ophthalmic products, separate instillations by at least five minutes. Remove soft contact lenses before dosing and wait at least 15 minutes before reinsertion.

Tell your clinician about all medicines you use, including other eye drops and over-the-counter remedies. If pressure remains elevated, your prescriber may consider adding a complementary agent. Combination therapies such as Latanoprost Timolol or Dorzolamide Timolol are options in certain cases.

What to Expect Over Time

With daily use, intraocular pressure may decrease gradually. Your clinician will monitor pressure and optic nerve status during follow-up visits. Eyelash changes and subtle iris color shifts tend to appear slowly, when they occur. Report any unusual symptoms promptly. Adherence matters: using the drop at roughly the same time each evening can support consistent results. A reminder on your phone or calendar can help you stay on track.

Compare With Alternatives

Other prostaglandin options may be considered if you need a different formulation. Bimatoprost is available as Lumigan RC. Travoprost with a different preservative system is offered as Travatan Z. Your prescriber will choose based on your ocular surface, response, and tolerance.

Availability and Substitutions

Supply can vary. If the item is temporarily unavailable, your prescriber may recommend a suitable alternative in the same class or a combination therapy to reach target pressure. We do not promise restock dates. You can also browse by origin on the Canada page.

Patient Suitability and Cost-Saving Tips

This treatment may suit adults who need once-daily therapy and prefer a preservative-free option. It may not be ideal if you have active ocular inflammation or certain retinal conditions; your clinician will advise.

  • Multi-month fills: reduce trips and help keep therapy steady
  • Refill reminders: set alerts so you do not run out
  • Bundle follow-ups: align visits with refill cycles
  • Travel kit: keep extra unit-dose vials in your carry-on
  • Insurance notes: discuss prior authorization needs with your prescriber

If pressure remains above goal despite adherence, your clinician may consider adjunctive therapy such as Latanoprost Timolol or Dorzolamide Timolol, depending on your overall eye health and tolerance.
