It is an injectable treatment taken once a week, containing a combination of two hormones known as GLP-1 and GIP. The generic name for Zepbound is Tirzepatide, and it may be sold under the brand name Mounjaro.

Uses

Zepbound is primarily used in the management of blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. In addition, it provides the benefit of promoting weight loss. Its mechanism of action involves increasing insulin secretion and slowing down food movement in the stomach.

Dosage

The recommended starting dose for Zepbound is 5 mg per week, administered through subcutaneous injection (under the skin). Depending on the patient’s response, the dose may be increased to 10 mg per week after 4 weeks. The maximum recommended dose is 15 mg per week.Side EffectsLike any medication, Zepbound carries potential side effects. Reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, constipation, abdominal pain, and injection site reactions. In rare cases, more serious side effects may occur, such as pancreatitis, kidney problems, low blood sugar, hypersensitivity reactions, and thyroid tumors. If any concerns or unexpected reactions arise, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider for guidance.

Precautions

Prior to using Zepbound, it is important to inform your healthcare provider about any allergies, medical conditions, or medications you are currently taking. In addition, informing your healthcare provider about any family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type is crucial. Zepbound is not recommended for individuals with type 1 diabetes or a history of pancreatitis. Close monitoring of blood sugar levels is necessary for individuals with a history of hypoglycemia.

Composition

Zepbound contains Tirzepatide as its active ingredient, which acts as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist and a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It is available in the form of a solution in various doses, including 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and 15 mg per 0.5 mL single-dose pen.
