Mekinist

Mekinist is a kinase inhibitor approved to treat certain cancers with BRAF V600 mutations. It can be used alone to treat people with inoperable or metastatic melanoma. It is approved in combination with the companion drug Tafinlar for treatment of inoperable or metastatic melanoma and for prevention of melanoma recurrence after surgery. The combination is also approved for metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and advanced thyroid cancer.

Dosage

• The usual dose is 2 mg once daily.

• Only for cancers with a confirmed BRAF V600 mutation.
• May cause heart problems, including changes in heart function — regular check-ups are needed.
• Can affect lungs, eyes, and skin — report any new symptoms right away.
• Not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding — use effective birth control.
• Can interact with other medications — always tell your doctor what you’re taking.

Usage Instructions

• Take once a day at the same time.
• Always take on an empty stomach.
• If you miss a dose and it’s less than 12 hours late, take it. If more than 12 hours, skip it and take the next dose as scheduled.
• Do not take two doses at once.
• Continue taking as prescribed, even if you feel better.

Storage Information

• Store in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C.
• Keep the tablets in the original bottle with the cap tightly closed.
• Protect from moisture and light.
• Keep out of reach of children.

Common Side Effects

• Mild to moderate effects: rash, diarrhea, tiredness, swelling, nausea, fever, or dry skin.
• Serious (seek medical attention): shortness of breath, vision changes, signs of heart problems (such as dizziness or swelling), bleeding, or severe skin reactions.
