Uses of Lotemax Ophthalmic Gel

Lotemax Ophthalmic Gel contains loteprednol, a corticosteroid used primarily to treat eye inflammation following cataract surgery. Its main function is to reduce inflammation within the eye. This gel is applied as drops into the conjunctival sac of the operated eye(s) several times a day, typically four times daily, for two weeks post-surgery.

Lotemax Ophthalmic Gel Precautions and Warnings

Here are some precautions and warnings associated with Lotemax Ophthalmic Gel:

• Avoid using Lotemax Ophthalmic Gel if you have an allergy to loteprednol or any of its ingredients. Also, if you’re allergic to other corticosteroids like prednisone, prednisolone, or dexamethasone, it’s advisable to steer clear of this medication.
• Refrain from using this gel if you have or suspect a bacterial, fungal, or viral eye infection (such as herpes simplex or varicella). Using corticosteroids like Lotemax in the presence of an untreated eye infection can worsen the condition.
• Don’t wear contact lenses while using Lotemax, as some formulations of this gel contain preservatives that may discolor soft contact lenses.
• Lotemax Gel may temporarily blur vision after application. Avoid driving until your vision returns to normal. If persistent vision changes occur, consult your doctor promptly.

Direction of Use

The recommended directions for using Lotemax Ophthalmic Gel are as follows:

• The usual recommendation involves applying 1 to 2 drops into the space between the eyeball and the eyelid (known as the conjunctival sac) of the operated eye(s) four times a day.
• Begin using Lotemax Gel 24 hours after surgery and continue for two weeks post-surgery. The medication typically begins working immediately. If there’s no improvement within two days, contact your doctor.
• Before using the gel, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and warm water. Invert the closed bottle once and shake it gently to prime the tip. Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, including your eyes or fingers. If two drops are needed, wait for 30 seconds before applying the second one. If using other eye medications, allow at least a 15-minute gap before applying them.
