Uses of Narcan Nasal Spray

Narcan Nasal Spray (naloxone) is an FDA-approved, over-the-counter medication used to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses. It works by blocking opioid receptors in the brain, helping restore normal breathing in someone experiencing an overdose.

Precautions and Warnings

While Narcan (naloxone) nasal spray is a life-saving medication, there are important precautions and warnings to consider when using it.

Not a Substitute for Emergency Care: Always call 911 immediately after administering Narcan. It temporarily reverses opioid overdose but does not replace medical treatment.

Possible Withdrawal Symptoms: Narcan rapidly blocks opioids, which may cause withdrawal symptoms, especially in individuals dependent on opioids. Symptoms include:

• Agitation or irritability
• Rapid heart rate
• Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
• Sweating and chills
• Muscle pain

Re-overdose Risk: Narcan wears off in 30–90 minutes, but some opioids (like fentanyl or methadone) last longer. This means a person can overdose again after Narcan wears off. Stay with the person and monitor them until emergency help arrives.

Limited Effectiveness for Certain Substances: Narcan only works on opioids (e.g., heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, morphine). It does not work for overdoses from:

• Alcohol
• Cocaine
• Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium)
• Methamphetamine

Use in Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women: Narcan can be used in emergencies, but it may cause withdrawal in the fetus or newborn if the mother is opioid-dependent. Seek immediate medical care after use.

Dosage

Standard Dosage:

• Each Narcan Nasal Spray device contains 4 mg of naloxone in a single-use spray.
• Give one spray (4 mg) into one nostril at the first signs of opioid overdose.
• If the person does not wake up or breathing does not improve within 2-3 minutes, administer another dose using a new Narcan spray.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea or vomiting
• Sweating and chills
• Increased heart rate (tachycardia)
• High blood pressure
• Tremors or shaking
• Restlessness, anxiety, or irritability
• Muscle pain or body aches
• Diarrhea or stomach cramps
