Uses of Prozac

Prozac is an antidepressant medication used to treat episodes of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, and bulimia (an eating disorder). It is part of a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which works by improving mood, appetite, energy level, and sleep. It decreases unwanted emotions like anxiety, fear, and even suicidal thoughts.

Prozac is also prescribed to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMMD). You can purchase Prozac under the generic name Fluoxetine.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not use Prozac if you are allergic to it. You might have thoughts about suicide while taking this medicine. If you experience symptoms, such as a change in behavior, more depression, and anxiety attacks, obtain immediate medical attention.

Dosage

For depression:

For obsessive-compulsive disorder:

• Take 20 mg of Prozac orally once per day.
• The maximum dosage per day is 80 mg.

For panic disorder:

• Take 10 mg of Prozac orally once per day.
• The maximum dosage per day is 60 mg.

For Bulimia:

• Take 60 mg of Prozac orally once per day.

For PMMD:

• Take 20 mg of Prozac orally once per day.
• The maximum dosage per day is 80 mg.
